Walking the Way to Health

'Walking the way to Health' is an initiative introduced by the British Heart Foundation and the Countryside Agency in October 2000. Its aim is to encourage people to take up walking as a way of improving physical health and mental well being. The initiative aims to improve the health and fitness of more than a million people, especially those who do little exercise or who live in areas of poor health.

Who is the Walking the Way to Health Scheme aimed at?

The scheme is aimed at anyone who has an interest in walking or wants to slowly introduce exercise into their daily routine as part of rehabilitation from illness, injury or to get fit.

What are the benefits of the scheme?

Walking is almost perfect exercise, requiring no equipment or expense, almost anyone can do it, it can be done anywhere at any time, it is the best way for people from all `walks` of life to become more active gradually.

Regular walking can also help to improve the confidence, stamina, energy, weight control and life expectancy of those who take part. It can also reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, bowel cancer, Alzheimer`s disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, anxiety and stress.

Does it cost anything to take part in the walks?

No. The Walking the Way to Health Scheme is free.

I am a very keen walker who likes walking long distances. Is this scheme in anyway suitable for me?

Even though the main aim of this scheme is to maintain individuals general fitness or to provide rehabilitation for those recovering from illness or injury, those individuals who are keen walkers are able to provide a service to the scheme by becoming Volunteer Walk Leaders.
