Health Challenge Denbighshire & Climbing Higher

Active Lifestyles: Community Capital Programme

In January 2005 the Welsh Assembly Government established a 20 year vision for sport and physical activity - ‘Climbing Higher’.  The strategy recognises that sport and physical activity can make a vital contribution across many Government priorities such as education and lifelong learning, the economy, culture, social regeneration, environment and, most importantly, improving the health of the nation.  Climbing Higher is part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s response to Health Challenge Wales which provides the national focus for the improvement of health and well being including making physical activity a part of everyday life.

The Welsh Assembly Government in partnership with Denbighshire County Council Leisure services have invited projects who will clearly demonstrate a significant contribution to the key Climbing Higher outcome measures of more people achieving the 5 a week moderate intensity activity target. The projects must be for community use and therefore include increased adult physical activity use across a wide age range and attracting increased male and female use as well as providing opportunities for minority ethnic and disabled people.

32 individual projects were received from community organisations who proposed a wide range of activities such as Trim Trails, Active Community Town Halls, Watersports and Climbing activities. All 32 applications have been accepted at Local Authority level and a final decision will be made by the Sports Council for Wales on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government by the end of November.
